Greek Cinema goes to… Cannes! The Hellenic Film Commission at the 76th Cannes Film Festival

Greece had, once again, a successful run in Cannes and below are some of the highlights presented by the Hellenic Film Commission of the Greek Film Centre.

  • The HFC was present at the national Greek pavilion in an effort to promote Greece as a top film-friendly destination. Numerous Professionals from the international audiovisual industry visited the Greek team’s stand to explore potential business collaborations, during the Marché du Film – Festival de Cannes.

  • “How to Have Sex”,  Molly Manning Walker’s festival breakout, co-produced by the Greek Production Company Heretic, won Best Film in the 2023 “Un Certain Regard” section of the festival.

The astounding debut, which follows three British teens on a summer holiday in Greece that turns dark, was filmed in Malia, Crete with the facilitation of the Hellenic Film Commission back in Autumn 2022.

  • “The Owl Screenwriting Workshop 2023”, organized by the Athens Film Officeand the City of Athens and supported by the Hellenic Film Commission of the Greek Film Centre, held its finalist projects’ presentation and award ceremony at the Greek Pavillion on the 20th of May.   

    The award ceremony began with a panel talk on the role of collaborative writing in film and television with David Isaacs (Cheers, Frasier, MASH, Mad Men) Tom Abrams (Dawn of War, Nails, The Notebook) and the two-time Academy Award nominee Phedon Papamichael (Director: Light Falls, Cinematographer: Nebraska, Le Mans 66, Trial Of The Chicago 7, Indiana Jones – The Dial Of Destiny) and continued with the screenwriters of 2022 taking the stage to introduce their projects to international producers.

  • Chiliadou Beach was shortlisted in two categories for the 1st Global Production Awards 2023 organized by Screen International. Τhe Award ceremony took place on the 22nd of May!


Chiliadou was shortlisted among locations from around the world to compete for the “Location of the Year Award”, as well as the “Outstanding Use of Locations – Film or TV series Award”. The nomination comes after Chiliadou Beach was featured in Triangle of Sadness, winner of the Palme D’Or at Cannes 2022, for which it also won the EUFCN Location Award 2022 during the Berlinale in early 2023. Chiliadou Beach was portayed as the castaway island where the protagonists find themselves after the explosion of the yacht.

  • The Hellenic Film Commission participated at the “Detox & Debrief” breakfast for film commissions, with fellow colleagues, members of the EUFCN and the Association of Film Commissioners International | AFCI. The HFC team, also participated in a Networking Event among EUFCN members and EAVE (European Audiovisual Entrepreneurs) producers in the context of the Marché du Film – Festival de Cannes

  • The Central Macedonia, Athens and Epirus Film Offices held meetings at the Greek Pavilion and participated in networking events that were organized in the framework of the Marche du Film 2023.  

  • “Liar Man”, the first feature film by Manolis Mavris won the Next Step Hildegarde Award in the Next Step Program of the Semaine de la Critique. The Award will facilitate the realization of the film, as well as its promotion in well-known film festivals.

In “Liar Man”, Manolis pursues his conceptual, yet playful, work on the systems that govern society and the human soul, by using architecture at its core.
